Beer Bistro

On our last day of our trip to Toronto, we finally gave into our temptation to go to Beer Bistro for dinner. We were drawn in by the Cheese and Lager fondue since we looooovveee fondue. One of the first thing we quickly noticed was that the menu on the outside of the restaurant was different than the one we got inside. This was quite unfortunate considering there was very little for us to eat on the actual menu. We managed to find something we'd enjoy, so we ordered the fondue along with the Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato soup and Steak Frites. We got the fondue first and were very excited when we saw it. The presentation was very nice and delicious looking. However, the bread was almost rock hard and the fondue itself was horrendously bad. We thought this was pretty surprising since it seems pretty difficult to screw up fondue that bad. It was also extremely heavy and we were pretty much stuffed by the time we finished it. We took a picture of the fondue...

Cheese and Lager Fondue

After the abomination that was our cheese fondue, we were pretty worried to get our mains. Our mains came moments after the server took our fondue away. The Steak Frites didn't appear as we expected but the soup looked good at first glance. The experience of eating the dishes, however, was quite the opposite. The steak was very good, but was pretty basic and it's not exactly hard to make good steak as long as you cook it for the right amount of time. The fries that came with it were mediocre at best and the "caramelized shallots" were just badly deep fried onions. Then there was the soup. The red pepper completely overwhelmed the dish, the croutons were rock hard (Lisa thought they were bone), and there was some definite texture issues. Needless to say, this one was hard to choke down. Here's some pictures (including some of our faces as we ate the soup)...

Here's what we'd score Beer Bistro:

Value: 4

Overall: 4.7 / 10
